“For the past couple of weeks local art crew Rogue Citizen decorated the walls of Gallery 13 with vibrant paintings dripping with themes of injustice attributed to the United States prison system. Friday night, all the pieces that did not sell, met the ferocious side of their makers. The four members of Rogue Citizen chop, chop, passed the axe around and took turns sending their creations to art heaven, or hell, or whatever.” -MN Daily

Chuck U

05/19/11
Posted by: Crystal

Hoolie Fest Artist Bio no 1
Chuck U

Years active: I've been drawing my whole life. But I've been doing it for a living for about 3 years now.

Aesthetic: Kinda Juxtapoz-y low brow, lots of line work and color.

Influences: Will Bradley, Gustave Dore, Aaron Horkey, Mc Escher, many of the artists on the gigposters website.

Shows, Exhibitions, etc.: I've had solo shows at Tarnish and Gold in Minneapolis and Nicademus Art in St.Paul, and I've been in group shows all over the country and the UK.

“Chuck U’s work has a life of its own, to the point you’re convinced there’s some elaborate story behind it. But there’s not. Chuck U likes to doodle and paint awesome things, and doesn’t put a lot of thinking into his work. This may frustrate those on a search for meaning, while a relief to those tired of trying to make sense of it all.

The worlds that come out of Chuck’s work are, oddly enough, a whole lot like our own, a mixture of fantasy and reality that come together and make sense. Actually, Chuck U’s work makes perfect sense. It’s everything and nothing, all at once. There’s no explanation for any of it. It’s begging to be a metaphor for life, but too brilliant to be that simple.” - artist statement [from Crystal Erickson]

“He's a one-man band who performs in a gas mask. But novelty isn't what
makes Hastings 3000 worth your time, it's his
grittier-than-a-gravel-road psychedelic blues stomp. Equally snide and
socially aware, devolved and dynamic, Hastings' grease-stained garage
rock is as singular as its namesake.” -Las Vegas Review-Journal

AlbumsSoundtrack to the End

"Fragile, daydreaming harmonies. Swirling synths that spin and spin until they fall down dizzy. Steady-galloping drums that coolly pass you by. These Midwestern boys have wrapped them all up into rip-your-heart out ballads about getting older but not necessarily happier – songs that capture the old joy of classic records and do-nothing days, and the ache of knowing they're mostly gone. Yes, there's a good kind of sadness, and this is what it sounds like."

“Hunting Club are more than the sum of their inspirations or techniques. Within one song the band can doodle in sparse terrain, then erupt into a crowded, speaker-blowing intensity. They can bring you to the depths of sorrow, and then rescue you with tones of hope. Add it all up, and Hunting Club become a beautiful and complex animal, defying any stereotype, and you realize it's more enjoyable just to listen than to dissect." -Erin Roof, City Pages

“Newsom, lead singer of the dynamic Zoo Animal, opened for Cutler with a set of brand new songs on an acoustic guitar ("Not even my drummer's heard these," she admitted). The set was standard Newsom: casually confessional between-song banter that at once warmed the crowd and put them at ease, until she would open her mouth to reveal a soulful voice that catches you off guard every single time, even if you're prepared for it.”

"He embodies the spirit of the wandering troubadour, to be sure, but there are no gimmicks or mimicry to his music. When he sings, he stands up tall and raises his eyebrows toward the ceiling, projecting his words into the room with the unabashed earnestness that so many indie-folk kids are trying desperately to achieve. Barnett has stumbled onto the key that could unlock and then unravel the whole neo-folk movement: If you want to seem sincere, you have to mean it." -City Pages -'Best Folk Artist' (2009)
